Wet Dreams and Why We Have Them
Not Just for Penises
Wet dreams, or 'sleep orgasms,' occur when you ejaculate or secrete vaginal fluids during sleep. Despite common misconceptions, any gender can experience them!
Why Do They Happen?
Your genitals are super sensitive when you're asleep due to increased blood flow to the area. If you're having a hot dream, there's a chance you'll orgasm without realizing it until you wake up. Sometimes, you might even wake up mid-orgasm!
Grown Ups
Wet dreams aren't just for puberty; they can happen at any age. However, they tend to occur less frequently as you get older since hormone levels stabilize. A 1986 study found that 37% of college-age vulva-owners reported having had at least one orgasm during sleep.
Dry Dreams
More common than wet dreams are nighttime erections or 'dry dreams.' These occur automatically, without any conscious thought, and typically happen during the night. Nighttime erections serve to refresh the erectile tissues with new blood, bringing in fresh oxygen, and clearing away accumulated toxins, keeping it healthy!
